八雲神社お祭り (Yakumo Shrine Festival) was recently held at a shrine near our school. One of the highlights of the festival was the lion dance or 獅子舞 (Shishimai). Shishi means lion in Japanese. Shishimai is thought to have originated from the practice of India's nomadic tribes in worshiping lions as a spiritual entity. It is said that the purpose of performing Shishimai at festivals is to drive away evil spirits, famines, and plagues.
